S.E.O stands for search engine optimization and is nothing but a way to improve the search ranking of your website or a blog for every search query by an internet user related to your business or a blog. S.E.O is a continual process and to maintain the same or higher ranking on the search engine result page (S.E.R.P), you must optimize your website or a blog regularly. In this article, I would share with you the steps to help improve your WordPress blog for long-term S.E.O
As the Google search ranking algorithm keeps on updating, the S.E.O strategy that would have worked for you in the past may or may not work for you, now. You should also aim to build an S.E.O strategy which has a long-term goal.
Before we leap into the steps to improve your organic website ranking, let’s understand how the search engine ranks a web page based on the search query from an internet user?
Let’s assume that an internet user wants to read about “Top 10 IT companies in India”. While 20 bloggers have written a similar article on their website; In that case, search engines will rank these websites according to the two main parameters namely Relevancy and Quality.
While the Google Webmaster offers relevancy signals, the Quality Signals are the user behavior signals. The relevancy signals are a part of an on-page S.E.O, and the quality signals are a part of an off-page S.E.O.
How does Google determine that your article is the best, based on internet users’ search query?
Let’s use the above example; when a user looks for information on the Top 10 IT companies in India, Google fetches thousands of search results based on that query.
Now let’s assume that you have written an article on “Top 10 IT companies in the world”. Google webmaster would not include your result on the first few pages of the search results, as your article is not relevant to the user’s search query. This process is called an ‘On-page S.E.O,’ and Google Webmaster tools provide these relevancy signals, also referred to as ‘Search Console.’
Let’s take another example where people are looking for “Top 10 digital marketing institutes in India,” and there would be various bloggers who would have written a similar article matching that search query. Now, in this case, Google would rank the search results based on the ‘Quality Signals’ it receives by the user behavior. This way of optimizing the blog for SEO is called an ‘Off-page SEO.’
Below are a few ways which can help you improve your WordPress blog for long-term S.E.O.

So, go ahead and install WordPress for your website or blog, if you haven’t already.
Choose a good Web Hosting Service
Fast page load speed substantially affects the SEO of your blog. By choosing the best hosting service providers who can ensure that the website uptime is at least 99%, SEO would not be affected. I have done a lot of research on various web hosting service providers and have written a separate article on that. Choosing a good web hosting helps improve your WordPress blog for long-term S.E.O.
Perhaps some of these hosting and Domain Name registrars will help you buy the cheapest service and get you started.
Write Quality Content
The most important part when it comes to SEO is the quality of content on your blog. Make sure that you are writing quality content as the user behavior landing on your website gets tracked by the search engine. The search console observes time spent on the site, social shares, number of backlinks, etc.
Once you start offering valuable and relevant information to your users, they would come back to your blog. They would read more relevant content on your blog. However, in case a user visits your webpage and exits without going through the information. that is bad your website SEO.
Also, if the website visitors did not find the content on your website as useful as they desired, your website would start ranking lower as compared to other websites with a similar content.
The best way is to write a content, as unique as possible, and free of any grammatical error. It is also advisable to keep posting the articles once in a while. That would help search engine keep crawling, thus helps improve your WordPress blog for long-term S.E.O
Identify what your audience wants
Once you build a blog on a WordPress platform, you can form a Facebook group wherein you start receiving questions from your website visitors. Based on those questions, you can write an article and solve their queries and at the same time, you stand a chance to build a trust among those visitors, thus helping boost the SEO.
You can also identify the search queries by the internet users from Google Search Console. Go to search console and click on your property (your website URL).
Click on “Search Traffic” and the dropdown would appear. Now click on “Search Analytics”.
It would show you which keywords your website showed up for, but the users did not click.
As long as you keep on answering your visitor’s questions and keep publishing articles which you think your website users might want to read, you can get the desired traffic to your blog. That way, you can improve your WordPress blog for long-term S.E.O.
Include Heading Tags(H1, H2, H3, etc.)
Heading tags are the HTML tags in the form of a code which conveys your browser how to display your content. Heading tags also contribute to the ranking of your website on the search engine results. Each page or a post can have multiple headings like H1, H2, H3, H4, and so on.
H1 tag is the first header and is considered the most important. H1 tag is used for the blog title on the header. H2 heading, on the other hand, is usually found on the ‘Post Title’, ‘Comments Title’ and the ‘Sidebar’. H3 and H4 headings are used to separate the various sections of your article.
To choose a specific heading while writing a blog post, go to ‘Format’
Click on ‘Blocks’
Choose a heading type e.g H1, H2, H3, H4, etc.
Include Image Alt Text(Alt Tags)
Alt text (alternative text) or Alt attributes provide a better image description to search engine crawlers helping them to index an image properly.
In case an image fails to load properly, Alt tags would be displayed. Alt Tags would help the crawlers have a better understanding of an on-page image. The Alt tag of an image should specify what’s on it and provides users with a text equivalent to images.
Get started with optimizing your blog for SEO. Follow the above few steps to get more people to visit on your blog. Initially, you need to get the basics right and keep tracking user behavior over the Analytics tool. Once you start receiving the traffic, you would start feeling motivated.
